What Are Wide Width Fabrics?
Wide width fabrics, also referred to as ‘room-high’ fabrics are woven / printed horizontally across the fabric, versus traditional single width fabrics, where the weaves / patterns are created vertically. Making up curtains using a standard width fabric (typically 140cm wide), generally means sewing / joining multiple pieces of fabric together so that the curtains are wide enough for the curtain pole / track. Joining pieces of fabrics creates a seam which can detract from the beauty of the curtains or blind, particularly on wider curtains where there may be multiple joins in the fabric to make-up the required width.
The key benefit of a wide width fabric is that your curtains and blinds can be made without any joins / seams in them for a polished finish to your window dressing. Please note the finished drop of the curtains must be shorter than the width of the fabric. This information can be found on the product specification tab on the fabric pages on our website. Wide width fabrics typically measure 280cm – 315cm and as they come off the roll horizontally you can calculate and order precisely the amount of fabric needed to fit across the window and have it sewn to the desired style on the top and bottom.
Wide width fabrics lend themselves beautifully to large expanses of glazing and are a popular choice, particularly as extra wide windows, bi-fold / sliding and crittall style doors continue to trend in home interiors. Wide width fabrics are also a great choice for the contemporary wave curtain heading. Together, these can deliver a neat and stylish curtain presentation for a truly polished look. They are also ideal for roman blinds over 130cm wide. Using a standard fabric roman blinds are typically made with a centre panel and then two smaller side panels to make up the required blind width. If a wide width fabric is specified your blind can be made without any joins for a sophisticated finish.
Wide width textiles come in many different qualities and types, from versatile weaves to tactile velvets. Sheer and blackout options are also available for various shading and privacy requirements.
