A Guide to Autumnal Styling

As Autumn / Winter 2024 begins, now is the perfect time to transform your home into a cosy retreat of warmth, comfort and seasonal charm. If you’re wondering where to start, we’ve created a handy guide for autumnal styling to help kickstart the process. Feel inspired with our hints and tips for creating a beautifully autumnal ambiance in your home!

How to Get Your Home Autumn / Winter Ready:

  1. Out with the old and in with the new – A new season brings the chance for a fresh start. Begin by taking some time to clean and declutter your living space, putting away any summer themed decor items and embracing the autumnal theme.
  2. Check for draughts – As the days become darker and the air turns crisp, now is the ambient time to check for draughts around any windows and doors in your home and consider a fresh window dressing. Curtains and blinds over your glazing can help to reduce thermal loss throughout the colder months, conserving energy to help reduce those energy bills!
  3. Consider motorisation – If you’d like to save energy and increase security of your home throughout Autumn / Winter, you may wish to consider a motorised window treatment. By offering the ability to pre-set timings, motorised curtains and blinds can close automatically when it gets colder and darker to help conserve energy, and close before you get home (i.e from work) for added security when it’s dark and you’re not there.
  4. Introduce seasonal newness – Give your home an instant update with some seasonal homeware. Layering up with cosy cushions and snuggle throws in warm autumnal tones can really set the mood for an inviting scheme. Fern / sage greens and terracotta schemes are prominent this season, as are natural hues and deeper blues such as navy and midnight. Warm and soft, diffused lighting can also contribute to a sense of relaxation. Consider warm-toned light bulbs and scented candles with autumnal fragrances like cinnamon, apple, or pumpkin spice.
  5. Get the ball rolling on any re-decoration projects – Christmas may seem a long way off, but when it comes to home interiors, it’s best to think about any decorating projects as soon as possible if you’d like to complete them in time for Christmas. The cut off dates for bespoke, made to measure curtains and roman blinds typically falls in the first week of November, so please get in touch now to get the ball rolling.

Homeware

This season, we are delighted to have seen the launch of some gorgeous new homeware from Laura Ashley. Bask in the beauty of fresh new bedding sets, ready made curtains, cushions and throws, perfect for an inviting Autumn scheme. Bring the outdoors in with a bedding set inspired by nature. We particularly love the Laura Ashley Lewcombe and Autumnal Woodland designs, featuring crisp leaves and woodland creatures in seasonal palettes of warm terracotta, fresh green and crimson red.

Layered cushions and throw blankets in autumnal hues can also help to create a cosy and welcoming space. Incorporate textures like knit, velvet and wool for a tactile experience that can instantly elevate your room, adding depth and dimension. The popular Parker throw by Laura Ashley is a fantastic choice. Now available in terracotta and sage, this timeless throw adorns a soft and sumptuous, chunky knit texture, perfect for this time of year. Complete the look with coordinating cushions. The luxurious Nigella velvet cushion is a real staple in the Laura Ashley range, available in an array of colours including the new terracotta and chestnut tones. The Barley Embossed cushion also works well with delicate sprigs, leaves, and foliage embossed on a soft velvet base, fitting synonymously with the seasonal theme.

Rugs

Adding other layers of textiles such as a rug will enhance the overall aesthetic and achieve a warm, homely feel. It can become a focal point for the room creating a real wow factor, or can be more paired back and subtle to co-ordinate with other elements within the room.

We are pleased to offer a beautiful selection of designer rugs,  including patterns that lend themselves effortlessly to autumnal styling. The Sanderson Robin’s Wood Round Rug (shown opposite in Russet Brown) is a beautiful example, with its luscious leaves and sumptuous rich colours alluding to the changing seasons.

Paint Colours

For an air of autumnal cosiness, incorporate warm neutrals or rich, earthy tones like burnt orange, deep burgundy, forest green, and mustard yellow to evoke the essence of autumn and create a sense of warmth.

The Little Greene ‘Sweet Treats’ palette is a great go to for welcoming schemes. This capsule collection of 9 delicious, warm neutral paint shades is designed to create inviting, indulgent and cocooning interiors. Choose from honeys and caramels such as Bombolone and Madeleine, or muted pinks such as Mochi and Split Pink, through to deeper tones such as Ganache and Chocolate Colour.

We also love the William Morris At Home paint collection, offering an array of seasonal tones enriched with heritage and charm. Consider Autumn Ray, Pressed Brick and Beech Mast for a warm, muted pop of colour or go for a dusky green shade such as Forest Road. Shop our full paint range here.

Window Dressings

Window dressings are a key factor in autumnal styling, providing a warm and cosy aesthetic that is both stylish and functional. Choose richly textured fabrics and seasonal palettes to tie the look together. Layering window dressings is particularly popular this time of year as it can provide additional insulation, privacy and shading benefits all year round. Simply layer a sheer curtain, roman or roller blind with a thicker curtain on the outside for an effective window treatment that can help reduce draughts and retain heat.

We are proud to offer an extensive range of fabrics which can be made up into bespoke, made to measure curtains and roman blinds. These come with the option to include a thermal lining to help keep the warmth in and the draughts out. We also offer an array of bespoke, made to measure roller blind fabrics with various energy management benefits, alongside the innovative honeycomb blinds from Appeal Home Shading for apex and shaped windows. If you’d prefer a quick and simple solution to instantly elevate your space, consider a stylish autumnal design from our ready made curtain range. The Laura Ashley Pussy Willow Blackout Lined Eyelet Curtains are a beautiful choice, as are the Old Castle Leaves curtains in Fern Green. Our thermal lined door curtains are another cost-effective way to reduce draughts at your doors and create a cosy feel. Choose from classic Laura Ashley designs across neutral and versatile palettes to coordinate with any scheme.
