Client Brief
Our client approached us for some teenage boy’s bedroom styling inspiration for decorating her 14 year old Son’s room. He was moving into what was their guest room so we had existing fitted wardrobes and a dressing table area to work with that needed to stay.
Meeting the needs of two clients can be challenging as it’s about balancing their ideas to ensure the end result delights them both. During our design initial meeting we discussed both our client’s and her Son’s thoughts to find solutions that would suit both their requirements. He was very keen on a grey and black theme being carried throughout the room.
Wallpaper
Initially, our client’s Son wanted the walls painted in a dark grey colour. As the room is north facing, we discussed that a dark paint would make the room feel very dark, however acknowledging the desire for a grey and black theme, we suggested some textured wallpaper that would give some depth to the room. When complemented with a lighter paint colour on the remaining walls, this would keep the room feeling light and airy.
Bold geometric prints or stripes are a great way to add personality to a teenage boy’s bedroom, so we suggested some tactile patterned wallpapers that may be of interest. Our client and her Son unanimously agreed on the stunning Lisle Wallpaper by Harlequin. In the carbon colour way, this richly textured striped wallpaper fit the brief perfectly.
Paint
Our client tested various neutral paint colours from the Little Greene collection for the remaining walls and decided upon Slaked Lime Mid. This light, neutral colour way beautifully complements the neutral stripe in the wallpaper, whilst keeping the room bright.
Choosing a neutral colour scheme that is both stylish and versatile is a fantastic starting point, allowing you to also add some pops of colour through accent walls, bedding, artwork or even ceiling decor.
The Little Greene Intelligent Matt Emulsion is an ideal finish for teenagers, providing a water-based option that is both washable and robust.
Roller Blind Solution
For the window dressing, curtains and roman blinds were quickly dismissed! We suggested a blackout roller blind that would offer the blackout functionality often requested in a bedroom, whilst looking contemporary, simple and stylish. To reduce light ingress around the top of the roller blind we suggested a cassette was added, matched to the blind fabric. We discussed a chain operated blind, but a motorised option got the thumbs up! The remote control is conveniently located on the side of the bed, and can also be operated using Alexa via the Sonos speaker! A definite tick in a teenagers room! Styling Inspiration
When styling a teenage boy’s bedroom, it’s great to involve them in the design process. It’s his space, so he should have an input on how it looks, as well as what colours, themes, and furniture he likes.
With projects such as these, it’s also really important to inject some personality into the bedroom decor and enable a teenager to put their mark on their room. We love the Rugby canvas on the wall and the open shelving unit, enabling our client’s Son to display items that reflect his interests.
Storage is another useful consideration. Teenage boys tend to have a lot of belongings, so making sure there is plenty of storage space for clothes, books, toys, and other items is always good. With our client’s existing fitted wardrobes and dressing area, we were able to create a stylish room solution whilst ensuring their Son had enough space to keep things organised.
Practical elements such as mirrors, a desk and a chair are also important. The inclusion of a designated work space is great for teenage boys who need a place to study and do homework. Also consider creating a feature such as a light! The large, exposed light bulb featured in our client’s room adds a funky, stylish touch whilst keeping the light soft and inviting.
Overview
Our client and her Son are both delighted with the end result. The room has a grown up feel to it, is practical with a large, light work space and features design elements to reflect his personality. With a little planning and creativity, our client was able to create a space that her teenage Son loves, feels comfortable in and is proud of.
