We love The Little Greene Wallpaper range; the stories, history and provenance behind the designs are fascinating. The designs themselves are truly stunning and will make a real design statement in any room.
The Broad Stripe Wallpaper design is part of Little Greene’s 19th Century Wallpaper range. The 1800s were a key period in the evolution of wallpaper production. During this century, the introduction of continuous paper reels from France, and subsequently roller-printing in 1840, replaced the traditional techniques by which individual rolls (called ‘pieces’) were printed by hand. The flamboyant, decorative style of the Regency Period championed the use of wallpaper. In particular, a fashion for striped wallpapers emerged as they became commercially available; a direct result of this era’s innovative production methods.
A classic ‘Roman’ or Regency proportion stripe originally produced iusing the ‘open trough’ method, where the stripes were created by bands of paint seeping through holes or slots in the bottom of a wooden trough onto the surface of the paper below. Striped wallpapers manufactured in this way are characterised by a brushed finish which was later superseded by a flatter print achieved with 19th Century rollers, demonstrated in these papers.
