We love The Little Greene Wallpaper range; the stories, history and provenance behind the designs are fascinating. The designs themselves are truly stunning and will make a real design statement in any room.
The Bedford Square Wallpaper design is part of Little Greene’s 19th Century Wallpaper range, which originates from particular London addresses in this era. The 1800s were a key period in the evolution of wallpaper production. During this century, the introduction of continuous paper reels from France, and subsequently roller-printing in 1840, replaced the traditional techniques by which individual rolls (called ‘pieces’) were printed by hand. The flamboyant, decorative style of the Regency Period championed the use of wallpaper. In particular, a fashion for striped wallpapers emerged as they became commercially available; a direct result of this era’s innovative production methods.
One of the most impressive squares in London, Bedford Square was originally laid out in 1775–6 and, until World War II, the majority of its houses were inhabited by lawyers, architects, publishers and other professionals. The original of this paper was saved from a property in the square, and is of a design typical of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
