We love The Little Greene Wallpaper range; the stories, history and provenance behind the designs are fascinating. The designs themselves are truly stunning and will make a real design statement in any room.
The Albemarle St Wallpaper design is part of Little Greene’s 18th Century Wallpaper range, which originates from particular London addresses from the 18th century. Some designs can even be attributed to a particular room in the house! Although paper making and printing was still undertaken entirely by hand during that time, there was already a variety of innovative print effects such as ‘flocking’ and the cheaper version ‘mock flock’. By the end of the century, paper hangers were regularly decorating rooms using full lengths of pre-printed paper to achieve the same effect as a traditional artisan decorator, who would have painted invidivual scenes around the walls of a room for an all-over effect.
This wallpaper design is reminiscent of Spitalfields silks, found in Albemarle Street, off Piccadilly, and it had an enormous pattern repeat of 6ft! Originally produced in a dark blue flock on a light ground, it was unusual to find so bold and expensive a paper used as shown in the lifestyle photo, in a low ceilinged, second floor bedroom. Such a grand paper would have been designed to have been on show – more often in a downstairs reception room where guests would be entertained. Available in 6 striking colours.
Complementing paint colours include:
French Grey-Mid (152), French Grey Dark (163), Bath Stone (64), Bronze Red (15), Lead Colour (117), Hicks’ Blue (208), Jack Black (119), Pale Wedgewood (249), Stone-Dark-Cool (67), Tuscan Red (140).
