Little Greene Great Ormond Street Wallpaper – c.1890
The Great Ormond St Wallpaper design is part of Little Greene’s 19th Century Wallpaper range. The 1800s were a key period in the evolution of wallpaper production. During this century, the introduction of continuous paper reels from France, and subsequently roller-printing in 1840, replaced the traditional techniques by which individual rolls (called ‘pieces’) were printed by hand. The flamboyant, decorative style of the Regency Period championed the use of wallpaper. In particular, a fashion for striped wallpapers emerged as they became commercially available; a direct result of this era’s innovative production methods.
Found in an early-18th century terrace house, opposite Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, this design featuring a colourful parrot motif was discovered within a multi-layered group of papers removed from the ground floor rear closet. This design was subsequently machine-made on cellulose paper in the late 19th century. Recoloured and revived from the Little Greene archive, the Great Ormond Street wallpaper c.1890 is available in multiple surface printed colour ways, 7 of which also feature in the more recent National Trust Papers IV collection.
Complementing paint colours include:
Aquamarine (138), Obsidian Green (216), Salix (99), Clay (39), Chimney Brick (247), Silt (40), Hicks’ Blue (208), Kitchen Green (85), Whitening (41), Air Force Blue (260), Pale Lime (70), Pearl Colour (100), Serpentine (233), Lamp Black (228)
