Tips for Choosing the Perfect Colour

Choosing the right colour to refresh your front door can dramatically impact your home’s curb appeal and create a lasting impression. Here’s a few tips to consider to help with colour selection:

  • Consider your home’s style: Bolder or darker tones may work well for modern homes and townhouses, whist classic deep greens, reds and blues suit more traditional and period houses such as Victorian properties. Softer pastel shades lend themselves beautifully to quaint country cottage settings. The front door should also transition seamlessly into your interior scheme.
  • Reflect your style and personality: It’s important to choose a colour you love that complements your personal style and character.
  • Harmonise with your surroundings: The colours of your roof, brickwork, masonry and landscaping should be taken into consideration when choosing your door colour.
  • Consider the type of door: The type of door you have should also be factored in when choosing a colour. Is it traditional or contemporary? Does it have any coloured stained glass? The colour should complement the style of the door for a cohesive look.
  • Experiment with paint samples: Before committing to a colour, test it out on a small area of your door to see how it looks in different lighting conditions.

Colour Trends

Timeless Classics

Black: Bold, sophisticated, and timeless, black front doors exude elegance and luxury. They create a strong contrast against any exterior, classic or contemporary, and can add a touch of drama. Black continues to be an enduring front door colour trend. Consider Little Greene’s Jack Black (119) for an absolute black tone, or for a warm and softened effect, opt for Lamp Black (228) or the Paint & Paper Library New Black (126) tone.

White: Classic, clean and minimalist, white doors offer a fresh and airy feel. They complement a variety of architectural styles and create a welcoming atmosphere. Little Greene’s Shirting (129) is a fantastic, pure white that can help to brighten shaded areas (shown opposite), or consider Paint & Paper Library’s Fuji (102) for a beautiful warm white.

Neutrals: Alternatively, you could opt for a warm neutral to deliver a touch of understated elegance. Lending themselves well to exterior masonry, stone and render, warm neutrals such as Little Greene’s Serpentine (233) offer a versatile option for any home. Alternatively, the Paint & Paper Library Wattle V (565) paint is a calming neutral with a very subtle green undertone for a sophisticated look that sits effortlessly in outdoor settings (shown opposite).

Nature-Inspired Hues

Drawing inspiration from the natural world is a popular trend.

Greens: From deep, forest and earthy green to soft sage, green doors bring a sense of tranquility and harmony, blending synonymously with the outdoor setting. They pair well with red brick or stone exteriors and are a popular choice. Deeper shades work well for period homes such as Victorian properties. Consider the Ho Ho Green (305) (see image 1 below) or Harley Green (312) paints, both heritage Little Greene colours ideal for front doors. The Paint & Paper Library Iguana (551) (image 2 below) and Nori (590) paint (see image 3 below) are other great options for an effective period door.

Alternatively, softer pastel greens such as Little Greene’s Pea Green (91) and Salix (99) seamlessly complement rustic settings. The light and airy Paint & Paper Library Glass V (585) Paint would also work well, as shown in image 4 below.

Blues: Evoking the sky and sea, blue doors can range from calming light blues to bold, royal navy shades. They add a touch of coastal charm to any home. The dusky Little Greene Celestial Blue (101) paint works superbly for country cottages (see image at top of blog) whilst Basalt (221), a popular and timeless blue-black, or Dock Blue (252), a deep indigo, sits well with traditional townhouse exteriors for a distinctive door scheme (see image 1 below). Other deep blues include Paint & Paper Library’s Plimsoll (655) and the charcoal-blue Acqua Viva (122) paint (image 2 below), delivering drama, luxury and depth of colour.

Bold and Beautiful Tones

If you’re looking to make a statement, consider a vibrant and uplifting colour to instantly draw the eye!

Yellow: Sunny yellow doors instantly brighten up your home and create a cheerful atmosphere. The Little Greene Mister David (47) paint (shown opposite) is a great choice for a confident and vivid front door or go for Paint & Paper Library’s Chinese Emperor (478) Paint.

Red: A classic choice that exudes warmth and energy, red doors are perfect for those who love to make an impact. Consider deeper reds such as the Paint & Paper Library Soumak (339) paint for traditional style homes or brighter reds such as Little Greene’s Atomic Red (190) for unique character and personality.

Pinks: Soft pinks have become an increasingly popular choice for front door schemes, adding a playful contrast to exterior brickwork and foliage. The Little Greene Dorchester Pink- Mid (286) is a stunning choice, soft yet effective for a romantic front door aesthetic. Confetti (274) is another superb pink shade commonly used on exterior doors.

Shown opposite is the Paint & Paper Library Roben’s Honour (344) Paint, offering a warm, earthy red-toned neutral / peachy pink, perfect for period properties and country cottage settings alike. For a warm welcome, you could even consider an impactful tone such as Pantone’s colour of the year 2024, Peach Fuzz.

Beyond Paint

  • Upgrade your hardware: Swap out old, tarnished door handles, knockers, and letterboxes for something stylish.
  • Add house numbers: Make sure your house is easy to find with eye-catching house numbers.
  • Embrace greenery: A potted plant or hanging basket can add a touch of life to your home entrance.
  • Create a welcoming wreath: Tailor-made wreaths can reflect the seasons or your personal style.

You may also wish to update the decor of other nearby exterior elements such as walls, window sills, door frames, soffits and eaves to really elevate your entrance.
